I don't understand why anyone would name it that. Since a blog is supposed to be exciting, or at least something that will hold the reader's attention, it ought to be named something equally exciting! Instead, the term "blog," which rhymes with "blah," reminds me of the kind of boredom or depression known as the blahs, or the sound a person makes repeatedly (usually in his/her head) when listening to someone else ramble on and on about a subject that doesn't really matter. No blogger wants either type of "blah" to be associated with his/her work.
I wonder if any parent has ever felt the same way about his/her child - that he/she named the child a name that is exactly the opposite of the child's essence. What if the child hated his/her name? Would the parents regret naming her that? What if that happened to Peter Merholz, coiner of the term "blog?" What if Peter Merholz woke up one day, after the term had become popularized by Pyra Labs, and cried out in despair: "Blaaaaaahhhh!!!! Why did I name it a 'blooooogggg'!!?"
If I were him, I would regret it too.
